Point what out, –CC
That we have progressed as a species by expanding our circles of compassion ever outward, caring for people we have never met and who are as yet unborn.
Okay, that makes sense, that I can follow, went back and read your original paragraph, and I feel better, it still confuses me the way its written. 😉

Sorry Xain, yup I probably missed the point of your page long quote, since I wasn’t addressing that. I looked through and have just done so again. Much is self evident, the rest is lip flapping.
. . . but Berman is suggesting that the true richness and “intensity” of life comes from uninhibited directness of experience, not from false excitement generated by repeatedly imagining ourselves to be on the brink of overcoming an imagined incompleteness. Balance gives us an experience of life that is even more intense than verticality, but in a much more evenly “spread out” way. It truly is a paradox. Nothing is a Really Big Deal to balanced people – because everything is. …
Sorry, but I read stuff like that and it’s like dahaa, so what’s the point? The “verticality” is a cute twist I’m not familiar with, but so what? Does it explain anything?
If you appreciate life, you appreciate the flow of time and you inhabit an appreciation for the folds within folds of cumulative harmonic complexity that surround me. Me I’m immensely fortunate living rural and being surround by 40acres, that exist in every walk you talk. This morning after a couple inches of fresh snow, Maddy and I saw, well she smells more than looks, turkey track way, rabbit tracks, a lone deer track, then we followed what I’m pretty sure is bob cats tracks, with a little field mouse tracks a little distance away and unmolested by the cat. All on a 15 min walk. From the cryptobiotic soil, to the pinion pine and willow trees along the creek, there’s and infinity of stuff going on. Same for walk through your city’s streets. You can’t stuff the reality of living within our material realm, or living within our social human realm into a bottle or formula and I think that’s what you keep trying to do Xain.
Seems to me at some point we just need to get on with living, preferably guided by some decent principles but fully appreciating life is about learning more than ‘knowing.’
Tell me Xain can you explain, what does “verticality” (within that ocean of existence and awareness and unawareness that we’re immersed in) actually mean?
