What is a “soul” and at what point does it emerge, and if it emerges what does it do?

Yup, seems to me only logical that every creature has “soul” commensurate with the complexity of brain/neural system.

Evolutionarily seems like it can’t be any other way.  Besides we do observe that other animals seem to mourn death of loved ones, along with other thoughtful curiosities.

Is our perception of a dead person’s soul an active observation or is it a memory which is occasionally recalled?

I’ll take issue with the ‘recalled’ – many memories are subconscious.  Right now with my little grandson pushing 9 months now and me still involved with one on one care taking, crawling, and squirming and spending time with me as I help him discover his home, by simply letting him run the show, I have no expectations beyond keeping him save, most other people are busy pushing their agenda onto the little guy.  Me, I watch him intently, thus notice how incredibly alert and curious those eyes and that mind is.   I talk to him, we communicate and he communicates right back.  Jes, this morning I came down and when he saw me and ejaculated a “hi” across the room directed right at me.*  That is love and souls connecting.  I may be gone before he ever have any real memories of me – what he’d have, so far as memory is concerned, it’ll be buried within the fabric of who he is emotionally and personality wise.

*(A few hours later came another ‘hi’ for his dad in an equally appropriate circumstance, so it sure seems the real deal.  Babies are ready to communicate with those who take the time.)

That, to me, is what our “ever lasting Soul” is all about, how we mingled with people and what rubs off each other, what we leave of ourselves within their hearts and minds and lives, when we’re done.
