    I’ll give you a chance to expand on this before saying too much, but this bothered me a bit

    Religion seems to look backward as science goes forward and so it’s easy to see why so many assert their disbelief in the existence of God. That’s a mistake, and a potentially very costly one.

    I’d say it’s costly for religion to look backward, but not costly for people assert disbelief. Let’s remember that most people are asserting disbelief in the specific God they were taught, so you agree with them, as you’ve said most people get God wrong. Now, the generic or “universal” God, well, I get that there are benefits to having sacred things and to some sense of ultimate justice, but I think we are finding ways to have those without having irrational beliefs. The “cost” then, is that we figure out how to value peace without having a magic watcher in the sky.

    Also, as Tee has alluded, you might want to read up on your history. For example, Zoroastrianism came before Christianity, and monotheism may be strong in the West, but it’s not world wide.
