“Louisiana Governor John Bel Edwards, a Democrat, on Thursday signed an abortion ban that would prohibit women from terminating a pregnancy once a fetal heartbeat has been detected.”
Well, at least the fetal heartbeat criteria is some kind of physical function criteria, as opposed to the pure fantasy of a soul in the test tube, or wherever the conception occurs.
Ultimately, though, the heartbeat criteria does not hold up as a measure of intrinsic humanity. The heart will beat on its own outside the body, clearly not an indicator of anything more than cells contracting reflexively, not a human being. Further, the heart can continue beating even after a person has been declared legally dead because the brain has died.
Expressions like “in your heart of hearts”, “deep in your heart you know”, “broken heart”, “heart of gold” etc. illustrate the long standing misassociation people make between the beating heart and our intrinsic humanity.
“I ran for governor as a pro-life legislator for eight years. As governor, I have been true to my word and my beliefs on this issue.”
Right, his actions are what the majority of the people in his state want. That’s how he got elected and that is how he plans to run for future offices, if he does run again. That’s what the people want.
The title of this thread is as asinine as the questions so often posed by its author, “Hatred saturated GOP absolutists – Fetal Heart Beat Laws”, as the actions of Edwards so clearly indicate. First he is a Democrat, not a Republican. More importantly this law is the opposite of “hatred saturated”. The people of that state have a strong desire to preserve human life. When the typical citizen from Louisiana thinks about a fetus with a beating heart being aborted the thought is of a baby getting dismembered and thrown in the trash.
Are laws against dismembering babies “hatred saturated”?
The originator of this thread has a habit of attributing motivations and attitudes to others based on his own uninformed projections and fantasies.
Fetal heartbeat laws are not “hatred saturated”, just the opposite, such laws are motivated by a passionate love for human life and a deep sense of urgent need to protect innocent life, to defend the defenseless. Where is the “hate” in that?
I think the heartbeat criteria is simply focusing on the wrong organ function as the measure of intrinsic humanity. We should, I think, concentrate on a different organ function, brain function, and develop brain function as the standard to determine intrinsic humanity for the purpose of limiting abortion, and replace the viability standard presently in use with a new brain function standard.
But by all means, do tell me all about how my position on this subject is also “hatred saturated”.
