TimB replied to the topic Need to confront the Trump faithful with the truth and some values in the forum Politics and Social Issues 5 years, 3 months ago
Number 1 would be the sanctity of truth itself. (I mean even a wee bit of sanctity. They treat truth like a crack Ho that has long since reached her expiration date).
Loyalty to allies might be a good value.
Realizing it is horribly wrong to separate young children from their primary caregivers and thereby screw up their development.
Valuing…[Read more]

3point, Thanks for this Douglas Adams quote. I love it. The puddle is no doubt an advocate for intelligent design.

Tho I suppose there might not be many young atheist parents, as they all probably frequently pray that their infant will sleep just a little bit longer.

This question just occurred to me. Should atheist parents teach their developing children, the fallacies of religion, or should they allow them to be exposed to lots of religions? Or both?

TimB: … They do NOT seem to be suggesting that you separate forever from any narrative at all.
Xain: But they do, that is what they are getting at.
TimB: No they don’t. Read this line again: “When we unravel from our persistent self-narratives that shape our realities and avoid the temptation to relocate too quickly into new stories, all sto…[Read more]

I don’t know where you find all this *#@%. It was on that same video? Maybe I skipped too much of it.
We are able to observe ourselves choosing to believe in existence. But our choosing is determined by current and/or historical contingencies. Hence, that is not free will.
Emotions are also determined. I don’t know about you, but my emo…[Read more]

Earlier history of medicine was rife with mistaken (even bizarre) ideas. I don’t suppose they were particularly following the scientific method, tho.

TimB replied to the topic T rump's Economy Not all it's cracked up to be in the forum Politics and Social Issues 5 years, 3 months ago
Three Fed rate cuts this year alone!! Of course this is understandable since we have been in a recession– NOT!!!
Those rate cuts work out well for the stock market. But now when we do get in a recession and the stock market drops like a rock, there won’t be much room for rate cut stimuli. Thanks to T rump.

They are also trying to get rid of every legitimate medical resource for anyone seeking an abortion in some states. And they are getting close to achieving this goal is some states.

TimB replied to the topic universal consciousness vs. individual consciousness in the forum Religion and Secularism 5 years, 3 months ago
Consciousness is something that we do. My consciousness is mine, because I am doing it. AFAIK there is no such thing as a “universal consciousness”. It would be cool it there were. We could tap in and see what anyone else was being conscious of.
CC, you mention again that “we cannot consider (an) organism without its environment“. The way…[Read more]

The top is from a movie about occupying dream space in other ppl’s dreams, I think, “Inception” or something like that. Thanks for answering my questions. I think lucid dreaming is supposed to seem very real. As far as remembering part of another dream while dreaming, I can’t remember.

TimB replied to the topic Neurotheology: God is real…inside your head in the forum Science and Technology 5 years, 3 months ago
I guess I am a 6, then. Tho I would say that I am more that 99% confident that nothing supernatural exists.
Back to the topic: I agree God is real (but only as a concept) inside some people’s head. Concepts are real, tho not very physically substantial, until transcribed to a medium outside of one’s brain.

I don’t know where they went, but wherever, I hope they don’t scare anyone. Basically a couple of days ago, he was in the news for warning about the Impeachment inquiry being a coup de tat that could bring on civil war.
