In a nutshell, we humans have religion by virtue of our complex verbal behavior. God is a concept. We could not have a well formulated God without the ability to conceptualize. That ability is a product of advanced verbal behavior skills. Sure, there are other pre-requisite characteristics that we and elephants, primates, etc., have as part of our evolutionary heritage. But God was created when we were able to have a concept of God. Emerging religions were passed on thru verbal traditions. And when textual behaviors (a subset of verbal behavior) became a common skill, religions could really take off.
“In the beginning was the Word. And the Word was God.”
